Tottenham Agree €40m Deal to Sell Cristian Romero to Inter Milan
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Inter Milan over the transfer of Cristian Romero in a deal worth around €40 million (£34.2m), with the Argentine defender now close to returning to Serie A.
Reports claim negotiations accelerated after further discussions between Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio and Tottenham officials. While Spurs were initially holding out for a higher fee, both clubs are said to have settled on a package that satisfies everyone involved.
If completed, the move will bring Romero’s spell in North London to an end and mark his return to Italian football, where he previously established himself as one of Europe’s top centre-backs.
Romero’s departure comes amid Roberto De Zerbi’s ongoing rebuild at Tottenham. The Italian manager is reshaping his squad ahead of the new campaign, and with the defender reportedly eager for a new challenge, Spurs have decided not to stand in his way.
The club have already strengthened their defence with the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, providing De Zerbi with experienced options before the season gets underway.
For Inter, signing Romero would be one of their standout acquisitions of the summer. The World Cup winner enjoyed successful spells with Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta, where he was named Serie A’s Best Defender for the 2020/21 season.
Known for his aggressive style, aerial strength and composure on the ball, Romero is viewed as an ideal fit for Inter’s defensive setup as they prepare for another domestic and European campaign.
During his time at Tottenham, Romero made more than 120 appearances, became one of the team’s leaders and regularly captained the side. He also played a key role in helping Spurs win the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League, ending the club’s 17-year wait for a major trophy.
Despite his influence, recurring injury issues and uncertainty over his future appear to have paved the way for an exit, with Inter now closing in on completing the defender’s return to Italy.
