James Maddison has responded emotionally after being criticised by Coventry City supporters for celebrating his goal during Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 victory over Coventry.
Spurs finally secured their first Premier League win of the 2026/27 campaign on Monday night, with Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies finding the net. The result lifted Tottenham off the bottom of the table and out of the relegation zone.
For Maddison, however, the match was especially significant. After spending much of the past 18 months recovering from a serious knee injury, the 29-year-old made his first start since May 2025 and marked his return with a goal.
The midfielder, who grew up supporting Coventry and joined their academy at just seven years old, celebrated by kissing the Tottenham badge. His reaction angered some Coventry fans, who felt the gesture was inappropriate against his boyhood club.
💔 Maddison Explains the Meaning Behind His Celebration
Taking to X, Maddison explained that the celebration was planned as a tribute to Tottenham for supporting him and his family throughout the most difficult period of his career.
He stressed that his love for Coventry City remains unchanged, insisting that his close friends and family know how much the club means to him.
Maddison also apologised to anyone who felt the timing of his celebration was wrong, explaining that he never intended to disrespect his hometown club.
He concluded his message by wishing Frank Lampard and Coventry good luck for the remainder of the season.
🗣️ An Emotional Comeback After Months on the Sidelines
Speaking after the match, Maddison revealed how much scoring again meant to him after the difficult rehabilitation process following his ACL injury.
He explained that moments like scoring goals and returning to the pitch were what kept him motivated during the darkest days of recovery.
The Tottenham midfielder also expressed sympathy for Dejan Kulusevski, saying he understood the emotions involved in returning to action after spending so long out injured.
Maddison added that he had discussed his return to the starting lineup with manager Roberto De Zerbi and was determined to demonstrate the qualities Tottenham had missed during his absence.
His comeback goal was a memorable moment, even if his celebration sparked an unexpected debate among Coventry supporters.
Tottenham will now turn their attention to Saturday’s London derby against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where Maddison will hope to build on his impressive return.
