Lampard Challenges VAR Decision After Marmoush Goal in Tottenham’s 3-1 Win Over Coventry

Frank Lampard has criticised VAR’s decision to allow Omar Marmoush’s goal to stand during Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-1 victory over Coventry City, arguing that the forward appeared to strike Milan van Ewijk with a raised elbow before scoring.

Marmoush put Spurs back in front in the 58th minute with an impressive curling effort beyond goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The goal was his first since arriving from Manchester City during the summer transfer window.

However, the goal sparked controversy after replays appeared to show Marmoush raising his arm while protecting the ball and making contact with Van Ewijk. The Coventry defender went to ground, but the Tottenham forward continued his run and finished brilliantly. VAR reviewed the incident but decided there was insufficient reason to disallow the goal.

Speaking after the match, Lampard revealed that he had expected the officials to overturn the decision. He believed the height of Marmoush’s elbow and the contact with Van Ewijk warranted VAR intervention.

Although Lampard acknowledged that criticising refereeing decisions after a game does not always change anything, he remained convinced that the incident deserved greater scrutiny.

The Coventry manager also highlighted several other decisions that frustrated his team, including a controversial corner, a challenge involving Brandon Thomas-Asante and a late incident in which his players were not allowed to benefit from an advantage. Lampard felt these decisions accumulated and negatively affected his side.

Despite the defeat, he praised his players’ performance and insisted that the final scoreline did not accurately reflect how competitive the match had been. He explained that Coventry were still pushing hard for an equaliser when the score stood at 2-1.

Lampard also acknowledged Tottenham’s quality, admitting that two exceptional goals ultimately made the difference between the teams.

He further highlighted the experience gap between the squads, pointing out that eight of his starting players had recently been competing in the Championship. While accepting that Tottenham still have room to improve, Lampard argued that the performance on the pitch did not reflect the difference in Premier League experience between the two clubs.

Tottenham ultimately secured all three points, but Marmoush’s controversial goal and the decision to allow it to stand remained major talking points after the final whistle.
