Van Hecke Blasts Tottenham’s “Unacceptable” Start and Appears to Point Finger at Robertson for Villa Opener

Jan Paul van Hecke has delivered a brutally honest assessment of Tottenham’s disappointing Premier League start and appeared to point the finger at Andy Robertson for Aston Villa’s opening goal.

The Dutch defender, who joined Spurs from Brighton for £52 million during the summer, described Tottenham’s performances as unacceptable after Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Villa left Roberto De Zerbi’s side still searching for their first league victory and at the bottom of the table.

⚠️ Robertson Incident Raises Questions

Van Hecke appeared to criticise Robertson for his role in the build-up to Villa’s opener.

With captain Micky van de Ven temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment, Tottenham were down to 10 players. Robertson chose to keep the ball in play rather than put it out, allowing Villa to regain possession before Johan Manzambi eventually opened the scoring.

Speaking to Dutch outlet Algemeen Dagblad, via Sport Witness, Van Hecke suggested that Tottenham should have played more cautiously in that situation and simply sent the ball out until Van de Ven could return.

😬 Van Hecke Unhappy With Spurs’ Performances

The 24-year-old admitted that the squad expected a completely different start to the campaign, particularly after Tottenham’s significant spending during the summer.

Van Hecke criticised both the team’s performances and the manner in which they have been conceding goals, while also expressing frustration over Spurs’ energy levels dropping during matches.

Tottenham now have the international break to regroup and address their problems before returning to Premier League action against Manchester United at Old Trafford on October 10.
