Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto De Zerbi reportedly made an attempt to reunite with former Marseille forward Amine Gouiri during the summer transfer window, but the proposed transfer never went through.
According to reports from France, the Italian coach viewed the Algeria international as a potential addition to his Spurs squad, having previously worked with him at Marseille.
👀 Why Tottenham wanted Gouiri
Gouiri impressed during his time under De Zerbi in France, and their previous relationship reportedly made him an appealing target as Tottenham explored ways to strengthen their attack.
Spurs were said to be interested in bringing the 26-year-old to the Premier League, but the move depended partly on creating space in their existing forward line.
Dominic Solanke and Richarlison were reportedly among the players whose departures could have helped Tottenham pursue the deal.
However, neither striker left the club during the summer, making it difficult for Spurs to proceed with their plans.
As a result, the potential reunion between De Zerbi and Gouiri failed to materialise, leaving the forward at Marseille.
🔥 De Zerbi still knows what Gouiri can offer
Having previously coached Gouiri, De Zerbi is familiar with the attacker’s ability to contribute goals and assists while operating in different attacking positions.
Bringing him to north London could have provided Tottenham with another option in the final third as the manager looks to improve the team’s attacking threat.
However, with the necessary squad changes failing to happen before the transfer deadline, Tottenham were unable to complete the move.
⚪ Could Tottenham try again?
Gouiri remains at Marseille for now, and there is no confirmed agreement suggesting that Tottenham will renew their interest.
Whether De Zerbi decides to return for his former player in a future transfer window remains to be seen.
Should Tottenham make another attempt to sign Amine Gouiri, or should De Zerbi focus on a different striker? 👀👇
