Troy Deeney Questions Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool Impact After Bournemouth Win
Former Watford striker and pundit Troy Deeney has criticised Florian Wirtz following Liverpool’s narrow 1-0 victory over Bournemouth, claiming the German midfielder has yet to look fully comfortable in the Premier League.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, Deeney acknowledged Wirtz’s technical quality but questioned his confidence and influence on games.
According to Deeney, Wirtz appears hesitant to take responsibility and make a decisive impact, something he believes Liverpool need to see more of.
Deeney also argued that Wirtz’s reluctance is affecting Liverpool’s attacking rhythm, suggesting the tempo drops whenever the midfielder receives possession. He added that manager Andoni Iraola was visibly frustrated with the situation from the touchline.
Wirtz Still Under Pressure to Deliver
Wirtz continues to face scrutiny over his performances since joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a significant transfer fee.
Although the 23-year-old has displayed flashes of his technical ability, his overall numbers have yet to match expectations, with seven goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances for the club.
Against Bournemouth, Wirtz struggled to make a major impact during the opening half and was eventually replaced in the 71st minute.
Jamie Carragher also criticised his performance during commentary, describing Wirtz’s first-half contribution as largely ineffective.
While Iraola highlighted Wirtz’s involvement in the build-up to Alexander Isak’s winning goal, the criticism from Deeney adds to the growing pressure on the Liverpool midfielder to become more influential and consistent in the Premier League.
