JOURNALIST LEFT RED-FACED AFTER FORGETTING MICHAEL OWEN WON THE BALLON D’OR!

A journalist has found himself in an awkward situation after asking former Liverpool striker Michael Owen about his best-ever finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings, seemingly forgetting that he had actually won the prestigious award.

When asked about his highest position, Owen appeared genuinely surprised before calmly replying:

“Well… I won it in 2001.” 😂

Owen’s response quickly made the exchange amusing, as the interviewer appeared to have overlooked one of the biggest achievements of his career.

The former England international won the Ballon d’Or at just 22 years old following an outstanding year with Liverpool. During the unforgettable 2000/01 season, the Reds won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup under Gérard Houllier.

Owen was instrumental in Liverpool’s success, famously scoring twice in the closing stages of the FA Cup final against Arsenal to inspire a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory.

His impressive performances helped him beat football legends such as Raúl and Oliver Kahn to claim the individual honour.

Interestingly, Owen remained the last Englishman to win the Ballon d’Or for 25 years before Harry Kane ended that wait by claiming the 2026 award on October 26.

The journalist’s mistake has certainly provided a hilarious reminder of a historic moment in English football! 😅🏆
