Victor Muñoz is reportedly set to join Liverpool FC after the club pulled off a late transfer hijack from Newcastle United in a surprise move.
The 22-year-old winger from CA Osasuna had been widely expected to move to Newcastle, but Liverpool moved quickly and activated his €40 million (£34.5m) release clause. The deal has now been described as “done and sealed,” with an official announcement expected soon.
According to reports from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the transfer is fully agreed, marking a major early signing for new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola. His knowledge of Spanish football is said to have helped Liverpool beat several European clubs to the player’s signature.
Muñoz, who enjoyed a breakout season in La Liga, is regarded as a fast and direct winger who fits Iraola’s high-intensity, vertical style of play. He is also capable of playing on either flank, giving Liverpool added tactical flexibility.
Liverpool are also still active in the transfer market for another wide attacker. RB Leipzig’s 19-year-old talent Yan Diomande remains a “dream target,” although signing him is expected to be very difficult due to Leipzig’s reluctance to sell.
Club officials at RB Leipzig are reportedly determined to keep hold of their prized young winger, despite strong interest from Liverpool.
Overall, Muñoz’s arrival signals the start of a wider rebuild in Liverpool’s attack, with the club still planning further moves to strengthen their wing options ahead of the new season.
