Alexander Isak has returned to Liverpool after suffering a minor injury while on international duty with Sweden this week.
The striker opened the scoring in Sweden’s 2-1 Nations League victory over Romania on Friday night, completing the full 90 minutes in Stockholm.
However, Isak will miss Sweden’s next three matches against Poland, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Romania after picking up the injury during the game.
The 27-year-old was seen with blood on his sock while speaking to reporters after the match, with the injury understood to have affected his toe following a stamp on his foot.
Isak described the incident as a heavy stamp but said the pain eventually settled.
The Swedish FA later confirmed that Isak and Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal had both been withdrawn from the squad because of minor injuries. Both players will leave the national team setup and continue their rehabilitation in consultation with their respective clubs.
Liverpool also confirmed that Isak is returning to the club, where he will be assessed by the medical team at the AXA Training Centre. He will therefore miss Sweden’s remaining fixtures during the current international break.
Liverpool are scheduled to face Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, October 11, with the club hoping Isak will have
recovered in time.
The former Newcastle striker has made a strong start to the season in front of goal, scoring four times in his first five Premier League appearances. He also scored the winner against Bournemouth in Liverpool’s previous league game.
After that match, manager Andoni Iraola praised Isak for taking his opportunity but suggested the forward can contribute more to the team beyond simply scoring goals.
