Andoni Iraola could soon have his own version of Eli Junior Kroupi at Liverpool.
The Spanish manager is gradually settling into life at Anfield, although his ideas and philosophy are still being introduced to the squad. Iraola is also continuing to learn more about his players and the culture surrounding the club.
His approach has been encouraging. He has shown a willingness to give opportunities to young players, while already helping Lewis Koumas and Trey Nyoni make progress with the first team. At the same time, he wants Liverpool to play progressive and attacking football.
The intensity has also returned. Liverpool are pressing with more aggression and covering greater distances than they did under Arne Slot.
Perhaps most importantly, Iraola is becoming increasingly involved in the wider culture of the club. This weekend, he is expected to attend Liverpool Women’s match against Everton, highlighting his desire to be involved across different areas of the club.
That represents a notable change from Slot, who reportedly used international breaks to spend time away in Ibiza.
Iraola appears much more connected to Liverpool’s wider philosophy and the responsibility that comes with representing the club.
However, there are still a few pieces missing from his squad if Liverpool are to fully implement his ideas.
During his time at Bournemouth, Iraola used a different type of No.10 from Florian Wirtz. Eli Junior Kroupi was often deployed in that role, operating more like a false nine or forward with a strong instinct for getting into scoring positions.
Liverpool currently lack a player with exactly that profile, but that could soon change.
According to Anfield Watch, Liverpool’s scouts are big admirers of German U21 international Brunner, who has already scored six goals for AS Monaco this season.
Liverpool scouts have reportedly watched Brunner in person on several occasions this season, something that usually indicates a serious level of interest from the club.
The Reds are also expected to monitor his Monaco teammate Lamine Camara closely. However, Brunner is particularly highly rated and is being considered as a potential option to provide competition for the No.10 position.
Liverpool are therefore seriously considering a move for the German, potentially bringing Iraola a player who could become his own version of Kroupi at Anfield.
Brunner has a similar profile to the French forward. He operates in comparable areas, likes to arrive in the box, looks to score goals and can also combine effectively with his teammates.
His style appears well suited to Iraola’s system, which could make a move to Liverpool an appealing option.
Here we go — Liverpool are closing in on Andoni Iraola’s ‘new’ Eli Junior Kroupi.
