Jurgen Klopp Dismisses Van Dijk’s ‘Disgrace’ Reaction to Germany’s Controversial Goal

Jurgen Klopp Dismisses Van Dijk’s ‘Disgrace’ Claim Over Germany’s Controversial Goal

Jurgen Klopp has rejected Virgil van Dijk’s criticism of Germany’s controversial opening goal against the Netherlands, insisting the referee made the correct decision by allowing the game to continue.

Germany took the lead through Felix Nmecha in the 32nd minute of Thursday’s UEFA Nations League clash in Amsterdam. Cody Gakpo later rescued a point for the Netherlands with a stoppage-time equaliser.

The German goal sparked a heated reaction from the Dutch players after Brian Brobbey appeared to suffer a hamstring problem shortly before the attack.

Despite Brobbey remaining on the ground in pain, Germany continued playing and eventually found the back of the net. Van Dijk was furious with the decision and described it as a “disgrace.”

Klopp Defends Germany’s Goal

Klopp, who returned to management in July, disagreed with his former Liverpool captain and argued that there was nothing wrong with the goal.

“It certainly wasn’t a disgrace. The goal was completely legitimate. I don’t have a guilty conscience,” Klopp said after the match.

He explained that he would have instructed his own players to continue playing unless the referee had stopped the match.

“The Netherlands didn’t, and we took full advantage of it with a really excellent move. It was a great cross and a great run, and Felix was exactly where he needed to be,” Klopp added.

The Germany boss acknowledged that emotions were high during the incident but maintained that the goal should have stood.

Kimmich Also Defends the Decision

Germany captain Joshua Kimmich also supported the decision, arguing that the referee had the responsibility to stop play if he believed Brobbey’s injury required immediate attention.

“I didn’t hear a whistle, so the game continued completely correctly,” Kimmich explained.

He suggested that Van Dijk’s reaction came in the heat of the moment rather than after fully considering what had happened.

Germany Suffer More Injury Concerns

Germany also picked up further injury problems during the fiercely contested match.

Arsenal forward Kai Havertz is expected to return to his club for an MRI scan after suffering a hamstring problem.

Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala is another concern and is set to leave the Germany camp because of a thigh injury.

Klopp confirmed that both players were undergoing scans and admitted that the situation was worrying.

“At the moment, both are on the MRI. Of course, that’s not great now. I just hope this is nothing bad,” he said.

Germany are also expected to welcome Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Burkardt into the squad earlier than originally planned.
