England have issued a brief statement following Ben White’s surprise return to the national team for the first time since 2022.
Thomas Tuchel has made changes to his England squad ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan after injuries forced Eberechi Eze and Jarell Quansah to withdraw.
Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes and Arsenal defender Ben White have been called up as replacements.
White’s return is particularly notable, having stepped away from England duty during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for personal reasons. Reports at the time suggested he had a disagreement with former assistant coach Steve Holland.
The Arsenal defender, who has earned four senior England caps, was previously unavailable for selection after the tournament. However, Tuchel revealed last year that White had made himself available again, although an injury delayed his potential return.
England’s official announcement simply confirmed the two new additions, without addressing the circumstances surrounding White’s previous absence.
White has not been a regular starter for Arsenal this season but featured in their Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City at Wembley.
His unexpected recall now gives him another opportunity to revive his international career under Tuchel.
