Paul Scholes Makes Controversial Declan Rice Claim as Arsenal Urged to Sell Midfielder
Paul Scholes has sparked debate by suggesting Arsenal should consider selling Martin Zubimendi rather than allowing academy star Myles Lewis-Skelly to leave this summer.
The former Manchester United midfielder believes Lewis-Skelly could be more effective in central midfield than Zubimendi, who has been linked with a move away from the Emirates.
Scholes also questioned whether Arsenal’s new signing Bruno Guimaraes and Declan Rice are the ideal midfield combination. He argued that Guimaraes performed at his best at Newcastle when playing alongside energetic midfielders such as Joelinton and Sandro Tonali.
According to Scholes, Guimaraes could give Arsenal more creativity and forward progression than either Rice or Zubimendi. He believes the Brazilian can help the Gunners improve their style of football and contribute around 10 goals during the season.
Scholes said he was unsure whether Rice’s playing style would complement Guimaraes, despite praising the England international’s qualities.
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also admitted he is interested to see how Guimaraes performs at Arsenal, while questioning whether the midfielder has enough energy to consistently influence games across the pitch.
Arsenal will face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16 before beginning their Premier League campaign against Coventry on August 21.
