Romano Reveals Tottenham’s Stance on £195,000-a-Week Star Amid Arsenal Links
Fabrizio Romano has revealed Tottenham Hotspur’s position on Cristian Romero amid reports linking the defender with a controversial move to Arsenal.
Romero appears increasingly likely to leave Spurs this summer following the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi. The Argentine has been linked with an exit for much of the transfer window, with a move outside England initially looking the most likely option.
However, recent reports claimed Arsenal had entered the race for the 28-year-old, with suggestions that Romero would be open to crossing the North London divide in a move reminiscent of Sol Campbell’s controversial switch in 2001.
Despite having three years remaining on his Tottenham contract, Romero looks destined to leave after a difficult period at the club.
The defender has also been linked with Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan, while he has yet to join Tottenham’s pre-season preparations after being given time off following the World Cup.
Tottenham Refuse to Consider Arsenal Transfer
Romero’s potential move to Arsenal has reportedly made his relationship with Tottenham supporters even more complicated. However, according to Romano, Spurs have no intention of allowing their captain to join their biggest local rivals.
Romano explained that Tottenham’s board and ownership have made their position clear and will not even entertain negotiations with Arsenal for Romero because of the intense rivalry between the two clubs.
Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2022 and has since made more than 150 appearances for the club. He was also part of the Spurs side that lifted the Europa League trophy in the 2024/25 season.
Arsenal are currently considering defensive options after William Saliba suffered a serious back injury during the World Cup, ruling him out for an extended period and leaving Mikel Arteta short of options at centre-back.
Romero enjoyed a productive individual campaign last season, making 23 appearances and scoring four goals while registering one assist. He also recorded 59 tackles, 31 interceptions and 103 clearances.
Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven has previously described Romero as “world-class”, and there is little doubt that the Argentine is highly regarded when performing at his best.
However, his disciplinary record and temperament have also raised concerns, with the defender picking up 11 yellow cards and two red cards in the Premier League last season.
Spurs Under Pressure to Sell Romero
Tottenham appear determined to move Romero on this summer, but selling him to Arsenal is firmly off the table.
A move abroad could therefore be the most realistic solution, particularly with the transfer window entering its final weeks and Spurs needing to resolve the defender’s future.
Romero is reportedly one of Tottenham’s highest earners, taking home around £195,000 per week, making his departure potentially beneficial from a financial perspective.
Spurs previously valued the Argentina international at around £70 million, but that figure is believed to have fallen significantly, with reports now suggesting Tottenham could accept a fee in the region of £34 million.
For now, however, one thing appears clear: Tottenham have no intention of allowing Romero to make the controversial switch to Arsenal.
