Tottenham Hotspur secured an impressive 2-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but one major talking point emerged from the match: both goals came after Omar Marmoush was replaced by Dominic Solanke.
Roberto De Zerbi surprised supporters by selecting Marmoush as his starting striker, leaving Solanke on the bench despite the England international featuring regularly in recent games.
Marmoush and Solanke had previously shown encouraging signs of working together during Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over Coventry City. However, De Zerbi decided to give the Manchester City forward another opportunity to lead the attack, with Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel operating on the wings.
😬 Marmoush struggles to make his mark
Unfortunately for the Egyptian forward, his performance failed to justify the manager’s decision. He struggled to find dangerous positions, offered little creativity and failed to make a meaningful impact in the final third.
Despite being viewed as a more versatile and quicker attacking option, Marmoush looked short of ideas and struggled to bring his teammates into the game.
His statistics were equally disappointing, with no chances created, just one successful dribble and only one shot on target.
Although Solanke has also faced difficulties this season, the similarities between their performances have raised questions about whether Marmoush offers enough improvement to justify Tottenham’s significant investment in him.
Chelsea’s defence also presented an opportunity for the 27-year-old to impress, making his quiet display even more frustrating for Spurs supporters.
👀 Solanke could be handed another chance
Despite Tottenham celebrating a crucial London derby victory, Marmoush missed the opportunity to strengthen his position as De Zerbi’s first-choice striker.
With Solanke waiting in the wings, the competition for the starting role could become even more intense ahead of Tottenham’s next Premier League clash against Crystal Palace.
