Rafael van der Vaart Admits He Made a Mistake Leaving Tottenham
Former Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has once again admitted that leaving Spurs for Hamburg in 2012 was a mistake in his career.
Van der Vaart became one of Tottenham’s most memorable deadline-day signings when the club secured his £8 million transfer from Real Madrid in 2010, completing the deal just hours before the transfer window closed.
The Netherlands international quickly became a fan favourite at White Hart Lane, particularly during Harry Redknapp’s time in charge. He recorded 46 goal involvements in 77 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions, playing an important role in both the Premier League and Champions League.
However, after two successful seasons in north London, Van der Vaart decided to return to Hamburg following the arrival of Andre Villas-Boas as Spurs manager.
Speaking on a podcast this week, the former midfielder acknowledged that returning to Germany was not the best decision from a footballing perspective.
Van der Vaart explained that although he had a strong emotional connection with Hamburg and wanted to help the club, he believed he was at the peak of his career while playing for Tottenham.
This is not the first time he has expressed regret over the decision. Shortly after leaving Spurs, he described the move as one of the biggest mistakes of his career and praised the Tottenham side that featured the likes of Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon.
He also spoke highly of former manager Harry Redknapp, describing him as a father figure and revealing how disappointed he was when the Englishman left the club.
Van der Vaart previously explained that his decision to leave was influenced by several factors, including the arrival of Villas-Boas. According to the Dutchman, the new manager made it clear that he was not his first-choice player, something that contributed to his decision to seek a move away.
More than a decade later, Van der Vaart continues to look back fondly on his Tottenham years and believes he could have made a different decision regarding his future in 2012.
