Jamie Carragher Sparks Debate After Naming Arsenal’s Only ‘World-Class’ Player

Jamie Carragher has sparked plenty of debate with his latest comments about Arsenal, despite backing the Gunners to win the Premier League title again.

Speaking during Sky Sports’ coverage of Arsenal’s opening league match against Coventry City, the former Liverpool defender suggested that Arsenal are favourites largely because he doesn’t see another team capable of winning the title.

However, Carragher also questioned the quality of Arsenal’s squad, particularly their attack, arguing that the Gunners still lack a genuine superstar in the final third.

He claimed Arsenal failed to strengthen their attack significantly and pointed to their unsuccessful pursuit of Vinicius Junior as evidence. Carragher went as far as saying that William Saliba is arguably the club’s only “world-class” player.

Those comments have caused confusion among Arsenal supporters, especially given the quality within Mikel Arteta’s squad.

Players such as Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Gabriel and David Raya are widely regarded as elite Premier League performers, making Carragher’s assessment of Arsenal’s squad a contentious one.

His praise for Saliba is also interesting because the French defender is currently recovering from a back injury and has been unavailable since suffering the problem during the summer.

Carragher’s overall argument has therefore left many questioning how Arsenal can be considered clear favourites for the title while simultaneously being described as lacking enough world-class quality.

The former Liverpool captain believes Arsenal could benefit from the uncertainty surrounding their Premier League rivals, but his assessment of the Gunners themselves has certainly given fans plenty to debate.
