Andoni Iraola Furious With Liverpool Star After Bournemouth Win
Liverpool secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday, with Alexander Isak scoring the only goal of the match.
After a disappointing first half, Liverpool improved significantly after the break, and Isak found the net 12 minutes into the second half to seal all three points.
The victory means Liverpool have now picked up their second league win from their opening five matches and remain unbeaten heading into the international break.
However, one Liverpool player came under heavy criticism following the game — Florian Wirtz.
Troy Deeney Questions Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool Impact
Wirtz arrived at Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen with huge expectations, but his start to life at Anfield has been difficult.
Speaking to talkSPORT after the Bournemouth game, former Premier League striker Troy Deeney questioned whether the German midfielder is currently making enough of an impact.
Deeney argued that although Wirtz clearly possesses technical quality, he appears hesitant to influence matches and has not yet shown enough attacking threat.
He also suggested that Liverpool’s overall tempo drops whenever Wirtz becomes involved, claiming that Iraola was visibly frustrated on the touchline.
Wirtz endured a difficult first half and recorded Liverpool’s lowest passing accuracy during that period. However, the article’s claim that he had no Premier League assist should be treated cautiously, as a reader comment specifically pointed out that Wirtz had already assisted against Nottingham Forest.
Iraola Gives His Assessment
After the match, Iraola admitted that Wirtz had a slow start but insisted that his performance improved considerably after half-time.
The Liverpool boss explained that Bournemouth began the match with a high intensity, making things difficult for his team in midfield.
According to Iraola, Wirtz gradually became more involved, found better positions to receive the ball and turn, and contributed more effectively in the second half.
Although Liverpool did not manage to create the final moment needed for another goal, Iraola said he was much happier with Wirtz’s second-half display.
