Barcelona make Viktor Gyokeres move as Arsenal transfer plans take an unexpected twist

Barcelona eye Viktor Gyokeres as Arsenal transfer plans take an unexpected turn

Arsenal striker Viktor Gyokeres has reportedly emerged as a potential target for Barcelona, with the Spanish giants considering alternatives to Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez.

Gyokeres joined Arsenal from Sporting CP last summer for an initial £55 million and enjoyed a productive debut campaign, scoring 21 goals across all competitions. His 14 Premier League goals also helped the Gunners secure their first league title since 2004.

Despite some criticism over his link-up play and limited involvement in certain games, Gyokeres finished the season as Arsenal’s leading scorer.

Arsenal have not signed another striker this summer, suggesting they remain committed to the Sweden international. However, Barcelona’s interest could potentially change the situation.

According to Spanish outlet El Nacional, Barcelona sporting director Deco is reportedly concerned that Alvarez would be too expensive and has urged the club to consider other options.

The Catalan club are now said to be exploring several alternatives, with Gyokeres among the forwards under consideration. Other names reportedly discussed include Ayoze Perez, Serhou Guirassy and Lautaro Martinez.

A potential move for Gyokeres could give Arsenal the opportunity to make a profit on their investment and potentially redirect some of the money towards a move for Alvarez.

Alvarez remains contracted to Atletico Madrid until 2030, although the Argentine has reportedly made his desire to leave clear. Atletico, however, have previously insisted that they are not looking to sell and have placed a huge valuation on the 26-year-old.
