Aston Villa have announced plans to take legal action against Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher following what the club described as “unacceptable insults” directed at the team and its supporters.
The Premier League side released an official statement on social media on Friday evening, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, confirming that legal proceedings would be initiated against the former Liverpool defender.
Villa also made it clear that they would not allow anyone to stand in the way of their progress in English and European football.
The statement read: “Aston Villa will initiate legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football. Nassef Sawiris, Chairman.”
The controversy began after Carragher suggested that Unai Emery could be tempted by the opportunity to become Manchester United manager if approached to replace Michael Carrick.
Carrick has faced growing pressure in recent weeks and reportedly received a temporary reprieve following Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher praised Emery’s achievements at Aston Villa, particularly his ability to consistently manage changes within the squad while maintaining strong performances.
However, he questioned whether the Spanish manager would turn down an opportunity to take charge of a club with Manchester United’s stature, especially given his success in the Europa League.
Carragher argued that Emery might want to prove himself at an even bigger club and insisted that football has an established hierarchy in which more prestigious teams can attract players and managers from clubs below them.
He then directed a controversial message at Villa supporters, saying: “So shut the f*** up Aston Villa fans. Aston Villa will never be Manchester United.”
Following the backlash, Carragher defended his comments on social media, describing the remark as a joke in response to the criticism he had received from Villa supporters over his suggestion that Emery might consider joining Manchester United.
He also shared clips of himself previously praising Emery and Aston Villa, highlighting how pleased he was with their 2026 Europa League triumph in Istanbul.
Carragher Admits He May Have Gone Too Far
Speaking further on The Overlap, Carragher reiterated his belief that Emery is the best manager in the Premier League and explained that Manchester United would naturally consider approaching the Spaniard when searching for the best possible candidate.
He clarified that he was not claiming Emery would definitely leave Aston Villa, but simply suggesting that Manchester United might be interested in testing his availability.
Carragher also compared Emery to former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, suggesting that successful managers sometimes want to challenge themselves at bigger clubs rather than accept that they have reached their ceiling.
Addressing the controversy, the former defender admitted that telling Villa supporters to use an expletive may have been unnecessary.
He explained that the situation had escalated because Villa fans had repeatedly targeted him on social media and insisted that his comments were made jokingly in response to the abuse he had been receiving.
