Liverpool Reporter Casts Doubt on Djed Spence Transfer Links
Liverpool’s reported interest in Tottenham defender Djed Spence has sparked debate, but one respected Reds journalist believes a move may not be the right fit.
Spence enhanced his reputation with impressive performances at the World Cup, leading some to suggest Liverpool could target the 25-year-old this summer. Reports have highlighted his pace, versatility, and ability to carry the ball as qualities admired by the club.
However, Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle has urged caution. He argues that Liverpool would be better served by signing a centre-back who can also play at right-back, or bringing in a short-term right-back on loan, rather than spending heavily on Spence.
Doyle also warned against making transfer decisions based on strong World Cup displays alone, noting that Spence’s valuation has likely risen significantly after the tournament.
While Spence is capable of playing on either flank, he lacks experience as a centre-back, which may not suit Liverpool’s current squad needs. With Conor Bradley expected to reclaim the right-back role when fully fit and Jeremie Frimpong providing cover, the Reds may instead prioritise a more versatile defender.
For now, Liverpool’s links with Spence remain speculative, and it remains to be seen whether the club will seriously pursue the Tottenham full-back.
