Arsenal Suffer Early Setback in Vinicius Junior Chase as Real Madrid Revive Contract Talks
Arsenal’s ambitious pursuit of Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior has reportedly suffered an early setback after the Spanish giants took fresh steps to secure the Brazilian’s future.
The Gunners recently emerged as surprise admirers of the winger, with reports claiming the club were exploring a blockbuster move. However, Real Madrid have now reopened discussions over a new contract, potentially ending Arsenal’s hopes before negotiations even begin.
According to reports, Vinicius is expected to meet with Real Madrid officials to discuss his role under new manager Jose Mourinho and continue talks over a contract extension. The Brazilian is reportedly seeking a salary increase to around €20 million net per season, with his current deal due to expire in June 2027.
Despite the recent uncertainty surrounding his future, the report claims Vinicius remains keen to stay at the Santiago Bernabéu, while Real Madrid are equally determined to tie one of their biggest stars down to a long-term deal.
The update comes as a blow to Arsenal, who had been encouraged by reports that no breakthrough had yet been reached between the player and Madrid. While fans had begun dreaming of a sensational transfer, the latest developments suggest the Spanish club are now pushing hard to keep the 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up.
Although some Arsenal supporters pointed to David Ornstein’s use of the word “exploring” as a positive sign—citing previous transfers that eventually happened—others reminded fans that similar reports have also ended with Arsenal missing out on their targets.
For now, Arsenal’s interest remains in its early stages, but Real Madrid’s renewed efforts to extend Vinicius’ contract have dealt Mikel Arteta’s side a significant setback.
