Tottenham Seal Sixth Summer Signing as De Zerbi Continues Squad Revamp — Bergvall Set to Seek Move Away
Tottenham Hotspur’s summer rebuild is gathering momentum, with Roberto De Zerbi already welcoming six new arrivals as he reshapes the squad ahead of the new campaign.
The Italian has strengthened almost every department of the team. Martin Dúbravka has arrived to provide experience in goal, while Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson have reinforced the defence. In midfield, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes headline an exciting new-look engine room. Despite those additions, Spurs are still expected to target attacking reinforcements, with Savinho, Rafael Leão and Eli Junior Kroupi all linked with moves to North London.
A major rebuild has also brought significant departures. Yves Bissouma, Alejo Véliz, Alfie Devine, Radu Drăgușin, Luka Vušković, João Palhinha and Randal Kolo Muani have all left the club since the end of last season. The biggest outgoing transfer saw Brighton pay £46 million for Vušković, despite the highly-rated defender never making a senior appearance for Tottenham.
Now another talented youngster could be heading for the exit.
Lucas Bergvall, who joined Spurs from Djurgårdens for around £8.5 million, impressed during the 2024/25 campaign and swept the club’s end-of-season awards despite Tottenham’s difficult domestic season, which ended in a 17th-place finish alongside Europa League success.
However, after a campaign that included three different managers, Bergvall struggled to cement a regular starting role. With Tottenham investing heavily in Tonali and Fernandes to strengthen midfield, and no European football on the schedule this season, the 20-year-old is now reportedly keen to leave in search of consistent first-team opportunities.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Nottingham Forest have already seen a £38 million bid rejected, while Newcastle United have also failed with an offer worth £46 million.
Romano reports that Bergvall has informed Tottenham of his desire to play regular football and believes his chances of becoming a starter have diminished following the arrivals of Tonali and Fernandes. With both Nottingham Forest and Newcastle pushing for his signature, his future is expected to be one of the key stories to watch before the transfer window closes.
Tottenham could still sanction further departures before the deadline. Cristian Romero and Guglielmo Vicario continue to be linked with moves away, while uncertainty also surrounds Richarlison, Pape Matar Sarr and several younger members of De Zerbi’s squad as the club’s overhaul continues.
