Tottenham are exploring an inventive way to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with reports suggesting they could offer a player-plus-cash deal to persuade the Hammers to part with the highly rated Portuguese star this summer.
The 21-year-old has been identified as one of Roberto De Zerbi’s top transfer priorities as he continues reshaping Spurs’ squad. Discussions with the player’s representatives have reportedly begun, but West Ham remain firm on their asking price of around £85 million and are under no pressure to sell, believing strong interest from several Premier League clubs could increase his value.
Manchester United Also Interested
Tottenham face stiff competition from Manchester United, who are also monitoring Fernandes closely. According to Fabrizio Romano, the midfielder has not decided on his next destination and is open to joining either club. As a result, the transfer is expected to come down to which side can satisfy West Ham’s financial demands, including the structure of the payment and potential add-ons.
Mikey Moore Could Be Included
To strengthen their position, Spurs are reportedly considering including highly rated youngster Mikey Moore as part of the deal. The academy winger impressed during his loan spell at Rangers last season, contributing seven goals and four assists in 47 appearances.
With Tottenham absent from European competition next season, first-team opportunities for the 18-year-old may be limited. Another temporary move—or even a permanent switch as part of this transfer—could benefit his development. West Ham, meanwhile, could see Moore as an exciting attacking option as they continue rebuilding their squad, particularly if they lose Crysencio Summerville.
De Zerbi’s Midfield Revamp
The move forms part of De Zerbi’s wider plans to refresh Tottenham’s midfield after already strengthening the defensive unit. Fernandes is viewed as an ideal fit thanks to his age, versatility, and technical quality. However, with Manchester United also in the race and West Ham refusing to lower their valuation, Spurs face a challenging negotiation.
The transfer saga is expected to continue throughout the summer as Tottenham work to secure one of De Zerbi’s key midfield targets.
