Dominik Szoboszlai created a touching moment during Hungary’s 1-0 Nations League win over Georgia after picking up a Hungarian flag from the pitch and kissing it.
The Liverpool midfielder was celebrating with his teammates after Milos Kerkez put Hungary ahead in the first half. Kerkez’s goal proved to be the difference as Marco Rossi’s team secured a narrow victory at the Puskás Aréna.
During the celebrations, Szoboszlai spotted the Hungarian flag lying on the pitch. He picked it up, kissed the national colours and then returned to celebrate with his teammates.
It was a simple gesture, but one that caught attention during an important night for Hungary.
The result was especially valuable after Hungary collected just one point from their opening two Nations League matches. They suffered a 1-0 defeat to Ukraine in Budapest before playing out a goalless draw with Northern Ireland in Belfast.
Georgia also had just one point from their first two matches, making the meeting in Budapest an important Group B2 encounter.
Kerkez broke the deadlock in the 35th minute, scoring his first goal for Hungary and ultimately securing all three points for his country. Reuters also captured Szoboszlai celebrating with his teammates moments after the Liverpool
left-back found the net.
For Szoboszlai, the kiss on the Hungarian flag added an emotional touch to the celebrations.
The 25-year-old serves as Hungary’s captain and has established himself as one of the most recognisable players in the national team. Kerkez is also part of the current Hungary squad, with the two players now teammates at Liverpool as well.
