Tottenham 2–3 Aston Villa: Mateus Fernandes Comes Under Fresh Fire
Tottenham’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued on September 19 as they suffered a 3–2 home defeat to Aston Villa. Spurs are still without a league victory after five matches and head into the international break in the relegation zone.
Much of the post-match attention has fallen on Mateus Fernandes, who started in midfield but was substituted at half-time, with Mohammed Kudus coming on in his place. Some supporters interpreted the change as a sign that manager Roberto De Zerbi was unhappy with Fernandes’ first-half display.
However, opinions on the midfielder’s performance have been mixed. One player-rating report gave Fernandes a 5/10, while another questioned the decision to take him off. Stronger comments circulating among fans, including suggestions that he is “not a Premier League talent” or should be dropped, remain supporter opinions rather than established facts.
Tottenham actually made a bright start to the match. Savinho and Archie Gray both came close to scoring, while Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki produced several important saves. Spurs enjoyed plenty of possession and created opportunities but failed to make their dominance count.
Villa eventually took the lead shortly before half-time. With Micky van de Ven temporarily off the pitch receiving treatment after a blow to the face, Johan Manzambi finished Boubacar Kamara’s delivery to put the visitors ahead.
Fernandes was replaced at the interval, but Tottenham struggled to regain control. Mohammed Kudus appeared to have scored Spurs’ first league goal of the campaign, only for VAR to rule it out because of an offside in the build-up.
Villa then took control of the contest. Nicolas Jackson doubled their advantage in the 67th minute before Emi Buendía produced a stunning long-range effort to make it 3–0.
Tottenham managed a late response, finally ending their Premier League scoring drought when Conor Gallagher pulled one back. Jean Paul van Hecke then headed in a second during stoppage time, but the comeback came too late as Villa held on for a 3–2 victory.
Sandro Tonali was among Tottenham’s brighter performers on the night. The midfielder created chances and saw a long-range effort deflected wide, providing a contrast to the criticism aimed at Fernandes following the defeat.
The result has increased scrutiny on De Zerbi’s tactics, Tottenham’s summer recruitment and the performances of several new arrivals. With the international break now underway, Spurs have time to regroup before returning to Premier League action.
