Tottenham Hotspur edged Chelsea 2-1 in an entertaining pre-season clash at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, but Paul Merson believes Spurs still have defensive issues to address before the new Premier League season begins.

Roberto De Zerbi named a strong starting XI featuring new arrivals Andrew Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke and club-record signing Sandro Tonali. Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso also opted for an experienced lineup, with Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Wesley Fofana all starting.

Spurs made the breakthrough after 17 minutes when Tonali marked his debut campaign with a superb long-range strike. Chelsea responded quickly, however, as Estevao rose highest at the back post to head home the equaliser.

The match took a dramatic turn in the second half. Kevin Danso was introduced from the bench but endured a nightmare start. Just moments after coming on, the defender lost possession with Joao Pedro racing through on goal and was forced to bring the Chelsea forward down. As the last defender, Danso was shown a straight red card.

Television cameras immediately caught De Zerbi’s frustrated reaction on the sidelines after seeing his side reduced to 10 men.

Merson criticised the defender’s lapse in concentration, arguing that such an avoidable mistake handed Chelsea a huge opportunity and placed unnecessary pressure on Tottenham, even if the match was only a pre-season friendly.

Fans largely agreed with the decision, insisting the red card was fully deserved despite the game being a friendly. Many pointed out that Danso lasted only a few minutes before being dismissed, while others stressed that the laws of the game should be applied consistently regardless of the occasion.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Spurs found a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time. Jamie Donley’s effort struck the post before Richarlison reacted quickest to convert the rebound and seal a 2-1 victory.

The result continues Tottenham’s encouraging pre-season under De Zerbi, although Merson’s criticism highlights defensive concerns the team will need to resolve before competitive football returns.

Tottenham’s preparations continue with a behind-closed-doors fixture against Getafe on August 8, followed by back-to-back matches against Hoffenheim on August 15 and 16. Their Premier League campaign then begins away to Brentford on August 22.
