Tottenham’s Poor Start Puts Roberto De Zerbi Under Growing Pressure
Tottenham’s difficult beginning to the 2026/27 season is reportedly increasing the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi, with concerns emerging over whether he is the right manager to lead the club forward.
Spurs’ problems continued on Tuesday night as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, ending their Carabao Cup campaign and extending their winless run. In the Premier League, Tottenham have collected just two points from their opening four matches — a disappointing start that has attracted greater scrutiny following their huge summer investment.
According to reports, senior figures at Tottenham have started discussing De Zerbi’s position, with the possibility of a managerial change being considered if results fail to improve. However, there is currently no confirmation that the club’s ownership has decided to dismiss him.
Tottenham’s significant spending has only increased expectations. The club reportedly invested more than £300 million during the summer transfer window, signing players including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio and Omar Marmoush. With such a major financial commitment, there is an expectation that De Zerbi can quickly develop a competitive side.
👀 Eddie Howe Emerges as a Potential Option
If Tottenham eventually decide to make a change, Eddie Howe could reportedly become one of the names considered.
Howe has been without a club since leaving Newcastle United in July after almost five years at St James’ Park. During his time there, he helped transform Newcastle into a side regularly competing for European places.
Interestingly, Howe has previously been linked with Tottenham. Reports in February claimed his name had been discussed at board level as the club considered possible managerial options for the future.
However, there is currently a significant difference between discussing a potential candidate and actually making an approach. There is no indication at present that Tottenham have contacted Howe or decided to replace De Zerbi.
🔥 De Zerbi Insists He Needs More Time
Despite Tottenham’s disappointing results, De Zerbi remains confident in his project and believes the team needs time to fully adapt to his methods.
Following the defeat to Liverpool, the Italian manager maintained that performances will eventually produce better results, stressing that his squad is still adjusting to his tactical ideas.
For now, Tottenham’s hierarchy appears to be waiting for signs of improvement rather than making an immediate managerial decision. But continued poor results could increase the pressure significantly.
With Howe available and having previously been discussed internally, his name could become increasingly relevant if Spurs eventually decide that a change is necessary.
For now, however, Roberto De Zerbi remains Tottenham manager, with no official decision having been made to replace him.
