Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has opened up about a frightening injury ordeal that left him questioning whether he would ever play professional football again.
The Spanish international suffered a serious foot fracture in January, forcing him to undergo surgery and spend four months on the sidelines. The injury was so unusual that even experienced medical specialists struggled to understand how his foot would recover.
Merino revealed that the doctor who examined his scans had never encountered such a fracture in that part of the foot, despite decades of experience. Several leading specialists were also consulted, but nobody could guarantee that he would fully recover.
The 30-year-old admitted he genuinely feared his career could be over before surgeons inserted two screws into his left foot to stabilise the injury.
Incredibly, Merino fought his way back to fitness in time to represent Spain at the World Cup, playing a crucial role in their triumphant campaign with decisive goals against Portugal and Belgium.
However, despite his remarkable recovery, the midfielder has struggled for regular minutes at Arsenal this season, although he continues to impress on international duty.
Spain manager Luis de la Fuente has even described Merino as one of the best players in the world in his position.
