Alan Shearer Sparks Debate With Declan Rice Red Card Verdict
Alan Shearer has sparked plenty of debate after defending the decision to show Declan Rice only a yellow card during Arsenal’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton.
Rice was booked late in the match following an off-the-ball clash with Brighton midfielder Malick Yalcouye. After Yalcouye appeared to nudge Rice following a challenge, the Arsenal midfielder reacted by kicking him and knocking him to the ground.
Many supporters felt the incident deserved a straight red card, especially after Manchester City’s Phil Foden was sent off for a similar retaliatory kick against Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes just days earlier.
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett also argued that Rice was fortunate to escape a red, describing the kick as a violent act under the laws of the game.
However, Shearer offered a different view on Match of the Day. The Newcastle legend said Rice’s reaction was driven by frustration but believed referee Darren England made the correct decision by issuing a yellow card.
Shearer argued that Rice did not react aggressively enough for a red card, saying he felt the midfielder had not “lashed out” at his opponent.
His comments quickly divided football fans, with many questioning how Rice’s incident differed from Foden’s recent red card.
Several supporters argued that Rice had kicked Yalcouye after the ball was already gone and insisted the Arsenal midfielder should have been dismissed.
The controversy has now added another talking point to Arsenal’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Brighton.
