Liverpool fans have been given some welcome news ahead of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup meeting with Tottenham, with Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi confirming that Richarlison will not feature at Anfield.
Despite being eligible to play in the competition, the Brazilian forward has been left out of Tottenham’s plans following the situation surrounding his failed attempt to leave the club during the summer transfer window.
De Zerbi was asked directly whether Richarlison could return for the cup tie, and his response was clear: “No.”
The Spurs boss explained that he had spoken to the 29-year-old several times at the beginning of the season in an effort to convince him to stay, but Richarlison made it clear that he wanted to leave.
His absence will likely come as a relief to Liverpool supporters, considering the forward’s history against the Reds. Five of his six goals against Liverpool have been scored at Anfield, including two memorable late equalisers for Tottenham.
Richarlison also attracted controversy during the reverse fixture last season after an incident involving Hugo Ekitike and a heated celebration following his goal.
With De Zerbi refusing to bring him back into the squad, Richarlison will once again be absent when Liverpool and Spurs meet — giving the Reds one less familiar threat to worry about. 🔴
