PAUL MERSON SLAMS TOTTENHAM STAR AFTER EVERTON DRAW AS BRUTAL VERDICT SPARKS MASSIVE FAN REACTION

Paul Merson has sparked a heated debate after delivering a brutal assessment of Sandro Tonali following Newcastle United’s latest Premier League disappointment.

The former Arsenal star reportedly questioned why Tonali continues to receive widespread praise despite failing to consistently influence matches when Newcastle need him most.

Tonali has established himself as one of Newcastle’s key midfielders, earning plaudits for his energy, work rate, passing ability and all-round contribution. However, Merson believes those qualities alone are not enough to justify the Italian’s growing reputation.

The pundit reportedly rejected the idea that Tonali should be labelled “world-class”, arguing that the midfielder’s performances have made that description increasingly difficult to justify.

“Calling him world-class is embarrassing at this point,” Merson reportedly said.

He also questioned Newcastle’s decision to keep Tonali on the pitch after the midfielder gave the ball away, suggesting that players operating at the highest level must be held accountable for costly mistakes.

“If he’s not interested, bench him. Simple,” he reportedly added. “How does he stay on the pitch losing the ball like that?”

The comments have divided Newcastle supporters. While some fans believe Tonali’s relentless work rate and physical presence remain extremely valuable, others agree that effort alone cannot compensate for mistakes or a lack of decisive quality.

Merson’s main criticism appears to be the difference between working hard and producing in crucial moments.

“Work rate is not the issue — quality in the key moments is. That’s the difference between winning and dropping points,” he reportedly said.

Tonali remains an important part of Newcastle’s midfield, with his technical ability, passing range and understanding of the game continuing to make him a highly regarded player.

However, Merson’s criticism has once again raised questions over whether the Italian is consistently performing at the level expected of a player with such a high reputation.

For Newcastle, the expectation is simple: their biggest players must deliver when the pressure is highest.

And according to Merson, if Tonali cannot do that consistently, his place in the starting XI should not be guaranteed.

The comments have quickly fuelled discussion among supporters, with many arguing that reputation should never protect a player from criticism when performances begin to fall short.
