Liverpool have reportedly ended their pursuit of a highly-rated Premier League defender despite previously being tipped to secure his signature.
The Reds are entering a new era following the appointment of Andoni Iraola, who took over at Anfield after Arne Slot’s departure just a year after guiding the club to a league title. Since arriving, the Spanish coach has been linked with several transfer targets as he looks to put his own stamp on the squad.
Among the names linked with Liverpool was RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida, who impressed during a loan spell at Sunderland. Earlier reports suggested Liverpool had held talks with the Dutch international and were even close to agreeing personal terms.
However, fresh reports from the Netherlands indicate the move is no longer on the table. Journalist Joost Blaauwhof claims there is currently no contact between Geertruida and Liverpool, with Iraola’s arrival believed to have shifted the club’s transfer priorities.
Instead, Sunderland are now viewed as the favourites to land the 25-year-old permanently after his successful spell at the Stadium of Light. Geertruida remains under contract with RB Leipzig until 2029 and is expected to command a fee of around £17 million.
Liverpool continue to be linked with several other targets, including RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, who is reportedly high on Iraola’s wishlist. The Bundesliga side are said to be reluctant to sell, valuing the player at more than £100 million.
Meanwhile, a surprise return for former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has also been mentioned, with reports suggesting the Uruguayan could become available if he ends his deal with Al Hilal this summer, potentially opening the door for a sensational Anfield comeback.
