Ashley Phillips’ proposed move to Middlesbrough has been thrown into serious doubt after an issue was reportedly discovered during his medical.
The Tottenham defender travelled to Teesside after Spurs and Middlesbrough reached an agreement over a permanent transfer that could eventually be worth around £20 million. However, the deal has now been placed on hold following unexpected findings during Phillips’ medical. 👀
Middlesbrough had reportedly agreed to pay an initial £7 million, with performance-related add-ons potentially taking the overall package close to £20 million. Personal terms were also believed to have been settled, meaning the medical was expected to be one of the final hurdles before the transfer was completed.
Phillips attracted plenty of attention during his loan spell at Stoke City last season, making 44 Championship appearances and convincing Middlesbrough that he could play a major role in their defence.
Tottenham were also in line to make a significant profit, having signed the centre-back from Blackburn Rovers for around £2 million in 2023, while reportedly securing a 20% sell-on clause.
For now, both clubs are working to determine the seriousness of the issue, with further medical examinations set to decide whether the transfer can proceed.
