Newcastle Ready to Make £63m Move for Tottenham Star as Fabrizio Romano Confirms Interest
Newcastle United are stepping up their search for a new midfield leader, with the club preparing for the possibility of losing Bruno Guimaraes. Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall has reportedly emerged as one of the players firmly on the Magpies’ shortlist.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Newcastle continue to consider Bergvall despite the recent change in management at St James’ Park. The Sweden international was previously admired by former manager Eddie Howe, and that interest has apparently survived his departure.
Speaking on the GIVEMESPORT Market Madness podcast, Romano revealed that Bergvall remains under discussion among Newcastle’s recruitment team as the club works alongside new head coach Matthias Jaissle to decide on its preferred midfield target.
Romano explained that Bergvall is one of several midfielders being assessed, with Newcastle expected to hold further meetings before deciding exactly what profile they want to bring in. The Italian journalist also stressed that Bergvall is not their only option, but believes Newcastle are highly likely to sign a midfielder because of the potential void left by Guimaraes.
Bergvall’s future at Tottenham could also become a major factor. The 20-year-old is reportedly considering his options as he looks for more consistent first-team opportunities. Nottingham Forest have also been linked with the midfielder, while Newcastle are understood to have already made an initial approach for him that Spurs rejected.
The Magpies could return with an improved proposal, although Football Insider has claimed they may wait until the UEFA 45-day accounting period connected to Sandro Tonali’s transfer to Tottenham expires in mid-August before making another move.
Tottenham, however, are unlikely to make Bergvall’s departure easy. Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi has previously expressed his admiration for the midfielder and made it clear that he would prefer to keep him, although the final decision could ultimately depend on Bergvall himself.
Newcastle also have several alternative targets, with Felix Nmecha, Angelo Stiller, Victor Fröholdt and former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Højbjerg among the names reportedly linked with a move.
Nevertheless, Romano’s latest update suggests Bergvall remains firmly in Newcastle’s plans as they prepare to reshape their midfield.
Replacing Guimaraes would be a major task, particularly given his creativity, influence and leadership. Bergvall may have a different style, but his technical ability, composure and huge potential could make him an attractive long-term investment for Newcastle.
For Tottenham, a serious £63m offer could force a major decision. Spurs must choose between continuing to develop Bergvall’s considerable potential or accepting a substantial fee for the young midfielder.
With the transfer window entering its final stages, Bergvall’s future is becoming one of the stories to watch closely.
