Thiago Reveals the Liverpool vs Arsenal Clash That Made Him Realise His Career Was Over
Former Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcântara has opened up about the heartbreaking moment he realised his professional football career was coming to an end following an appearance against Arsenal in February 2024.
Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast with David Ornstein, the Spanish midfielder reflected on the hamstring injury that ended his hopes of returning to regular first-team action.
Thiago revealed that former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp had invited him to travel with the squad despite medical advice suggesting he was not yet ready to play.
However, after coming on as a substitute against Arsenal, the midfielder suffered another hamstring injury just five minutes into his appearance.
The 35-year-old admitted that his ongoing fitness problems made him realise the injury could mark the end of his playing days.
Thiago explained that he became emotional during the match and continued crying afterwards, knowing how difficult it had become to overcome his repeated injuries.
He officially announced his retirement in July 2024, bringing an end to a career that included spells at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
Although his time at Anfield was heavily affected by injuries, Thiago remained admired for his technical ability, composure and intelligence on the ball.
His final appearance against Arsenal became a painful turning point, marking the end of his hopes of continuing his professional career.
