Declan Rice escapes red card controversy after Brighton incident
Declan Rice avoided a sending-off during Arsenal’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Brighton after appearing to kick out at Malick Yalcouye off the ball.
The incident happened in the closing stages at the Amex Stadium, with tensions rising after Brighton had dominated Arsenal. Yalcouye appeared to make slight contact with Rice, prompting the Arsenal midfielder to react.
Rice then followed the Brighton player before swiping at his legs and bringing him down.
The challenge immediately sparked debate, with questions raised over whether the Arsenal midfielder should have been shown a straight red card for violent conduct.
However, VAR reviewed the incident and decided that it did not reach the required threshold for a red card. Rice was shown only a yellow card, with the incident reportedly viewed as a moment of petulance rather than violent conduct.
Former players and pundits, including Troy Deeney and Jason Cundy, disagreed with the decision and argued that Rice was fortunate to remain on the pitch.
Cundy insisted the incident deserved a red card, while Deeney suggested Rice had briefly lost his temper.
Despite the controversy, Rice will be available for Arsenal’s next match.
The defeat was Arsenal’s heaviest in more than three years and their first Premier League loss of the season. It also saw them drop to second place in the table behind Manchester City.
