Andoni Iraola has played down the clash between Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones, calling it a normal competitive moment.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has dismissed concerns over the on-field confrontation between Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones after the Reds’ pre-season victory over Wrexham, insisting it reflected the squad’s competitive spirit rather than any internal conflict.

The incident attracted plenty of attention after cameras captured the two midfielders in a heated exchange before teammates stepped in. Reports claimed the disagreement began after Szoboszlai was substituted, with Jones expecting to receive the captain’s armband before it was instead handed to Kostas Tsimikas.

Speaking after the match, Iraola confirmed he had spoken to both players and stressed there were no lingering issues within the dressing room. He explained that emotions can boil over in football, particularly during pre-season when every player is determined to impress and secure a place in the starting lineup.

The Liverpool boss described both Szoboszlai and Jones as passionate professionals who set high standards for themselves and their teammates. He added that disagreements are inevitable in a competitive environment and insisted he would be more concerned if his players showed no emotion.

Iraola also praised the pair for resolving the matter quickly, making it clear there is mutual respect between them. He rejected suggestions that the incident could damage team unity as Liverpool continue preparing for the new Premier League campaign.

People close to the club have also played down the situation, describing it as a brief disagreement that became public only because it happened on the pitch after the final whistle. They believe similar exchanges occur regularly in elite football but rarely receive attention when they happen behind closed doors.

Since arriving at Anfield, Iraola has emphasised competition for places, making it clear that every player must earn their position regardless of reputation. That philosophy has increased the intensity of training, with players pushing each other to perform at the highest level.

Szoboszlai remains a vital figure in Liverpool’s midfield thanks to his energy, creativity and pressing ability, while Jones continues to compete for regular minutes despite ongoing speculation over his future. Iraola has repeatedly spoken highly of the academy graduate and hopes to keep him at the club.

The manager expects both players to move on quickly and use the incident as added motivation. He believes successful teams are built on strong personalities who challenge one another, provided those moments remain focused on improving performances.

Szoboszlai later avoided discussing the confrontation, instead insisting the squad is fully united behind captain Virgil van Dijk and Iraola. He stressed that everyone at the club shares the same ambition of competing for major honours this season.

With Liverpool continuing their preparations for the new campaign, the coaching staff view the incident as a minor issue that has already been resolved. Their focus remains on building momentum under Iraola and ensuring the team is ready for the challenges ahead.
