Tottenham have reportedly reached a verbal agreement to sell club captain Cristian Romero to Serie A champions Inter Milan in a deal worth around £34 million.
The 28-year-old Argentina international has been strongly linked with a summer exit, with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona previously credited with interest. According to reports from Argentina, Spurs and Inter have now agreed on the transfer fee, although Romero still needs to agree personal terms before the move can be completed.
Romero’s expected departure comes after Tottenham strengthened their defence by signing Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, both of whom are expected to feature prominently under Roberto De Zerbi this season.
Spurs have also reinforced other areas of the squad, bringing in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Andrew Robertson, and Martin Dúbravka as part of an ambitious summer rebuild.
Earlier this week, De Zerbi confirmed he would not stand in Romero’s way if the defender wanted to leave, praising his professionalism and describing him as one of the best centre-backs in world football while insisting he respects every player’s wishes.
Tottenham are currently on their pre-season tour and continue preparations for the new Premier League campaign, which begins with an away trip to Brentford on August 22.
