Tottenham have reached an agreement in principle with Inter Milan over a €40 million deal for World Cup-winning defender Cristian Romero, a transfer that is already dividing supporters.
Roberto De Zerbi’s first summer in charge has been one of sweeping change, with Tottenham investing heavily to reshape the squad while allowing several senior players to leave.
The latest major development sees Spurs agree a deal in principle worth €40m for Romero’s move to Inter Milan, bringing an end to the Argentine’s five-year spell in North London.
The 28-year-old has been one of Tottenham’s most influential defenders since joining from Atalanta in 2021, helping the club lift the Europa League and regularly wearing the captain’s armband. However, recurring injuries, inconsistent form, and his desire to return to Serie A have paved the way for the transfer.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions among fans. Some believe €40m is a fair fee for a player with injury concerns and see the sale as a sensible way to support De Zerbi’s rebuild. Others feel Spurs have allowed one of their best defenders to leave for less than his true value, raising concerns about replacing his leadership and experience.
Inter, meanwhile, view Romero as a marquee addition to strengthen their backline as they target domestic and European success.
Although Tottenham have already strengthened their defence with arrivals including Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi, and Andrew Robertson, Romero’s departure leaves a significant gap that De Zerbi’s new-look squad will need to fill.
