Man United and Liverpool Suffer Transfer Setback in Pursuit of French Defender
Manchester United and Liverpool could be forced to reconsider their January defensive plans after Juventus reportedly made it clear they have no intention of selling Pierre Kalulu during the middle of the season.
The 26-year-old French international has established himself as an important player in Turin, with his performances attracting increasing interest from Premier League clubs.
Manchester United are believed to be particularly interested in Kalulu, while Liverpool are also keeping a close eye on his situation.
Juventus Reject January Exit
According to reports from the Manchester Evening News, Juventus are unwilling to entertain offers for Kalulu during the January transfer window, despite interest from both United and Liverpool.
The decision is a significant blow to the two Premier League clubs, especially Manchester United, who are looking to strengthen their defence.
Kalulu’s versatility makes him an attractive target. The former AC Milan defender is capable of playing both centre-back and right-back, giving managers an option who can cover multiple positions.
United’s interest also appears to be genuine, with GOAL reporting that the club has sent scouts to Italy to monitor the defender. Liverpool and Tottenham are also reportedly tracking him.
Juventus were said to value Kalulu at approximately €50 million during the summer, meaning any potential January deal could require a substantial investment.
United’s Need Could Be Greater
Kalulu could be an especially useful addition for Michael Carrick’s Manchester United side, who have shown defensive weaknesses at the beginning of the season.
His pace, experience and ability to play in different defensive roles could help solve several problems within the squad.
Liverpool’s interest is understandable too, although their need for another defender could depend on how their current options perform over the next few months.
For now, however, Juventus’ stance remains the biggest obstacle. Kalulu is reportedly regarded as one of Luciano Spalletti’s trusted defenders, making a January departure unlikely unless a huge offer arrives.
United and Liverpool may therefore have to wait until the summer before making a serious move. With Juventus already valuing the player at around €50 million, the Italian club could demand an even higher fee for a mid-season sale.
