Tottenham are reportedly not considering sacking Roberto De Zerbi at this stage, with the club determined to avoid making a rushed decision despite their difficult start to the Premier League season.
Spurs narrowly escaped relegation last season before investing more than £300 million during the summer transfer window to completely reshape the squad and give De Zerbi the tools to turn things around. However, the poor form has continued into the new campaign. After four matches, Tottenham remain without a victory, collecting just two points and finding themselves dangerously close to the relegation places.
Their latest setback came on Saturday when Spurs were held to a goalless draw by Everton at home. The result was greeted by boos from sections of the Tottenham support and once again raised questions over De Zerbi’s future. Despite the growing frustration, reports indicate that the club has no immediate plans to replace him.
Tottenham believe the manager deserves more time, particularly because the squad has undergone major changes and several players have been unavailable. The club reportedly expects the team to improve once the new signings settle and the squad becomes more settled.
Tottenham’s stance on De Zerbi
Journalist Pete O’Rourke, speaking to Football Insider, claims Tottenham continue to back De Zerbi, while the manager remains confident that he can solve the team’s problems if given enough time.
O’Rourke admitted that two points from four Premier League games is clearly below expectations and that no manager can endure poor results forever. However, he believes De Zerbi has earned some patience after helping Spurs avoid relegation last season.
The journalist also pointed out that Tottenham’s numerous summer additions will need time to adapt and reach their best level. For now, De Zerbi reportedly feels he still has the support of the board, with Tottenham showing no intention of making an impulsive managerial change.
Following the Everton draw, De Zerbi suggested that the biggest issue may currently be psychological. He used the Italian term “sbloccarsi”, meaning the team needs to “unblock” itself after going four games without a win or a goal.
De Zerbi insisted that his squad possesses enough quality to score and win games, but acknowledged that several players have not traditionally been prolific goalscorers. Aside from Solanke and Marmoush, he believes the team may need to produce goals collectively through better overall performances.
For now, Tottenham appear willing to give De Zerbi the opportunity to fix the problems on the pitch rather than make another major change in the dugout.
