‘Jota! Jota!’ — Saudi Fans Spark Fury After Using Diogo Jota’s Name to Provoke Rúben Neves

Saudi Fans Crossed the Line by Chanting Diogo Jota’s Name at Rúben Neves

Rúben Neves was visibly upset after some Al-Taawoun supporters repeatedly chanted “Jota! Jota!” during their Saudi Pro League clash with Al-Hilal.

The chants appeared to be aimed at provoking the Portuguese midfielder by invoking the memory of his close friend and former teammate, Diogo Jota.

Neves eventually confronted the supporters before pointing towards the sky, seemingly reminding them that Jota was watching over him.

Jota and Neves shared a close friendship after playing together at Wolverhampton and for Portugal. Neves previously described Jota as being like a member of his family.

Jota tragically died alongside his younger brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain in July 2025 at the age of 28. Neves was deeply affected by the tragedy and was among those who helped carry Jota’s coffin at his funeral.

Despite the emotional provocation from the stands, Neves kept his focus on the pitch. Al-Hilal responded emphatically, demolishing Al-Taawoun 6-0.

The result left Al-Hilal at the top of the Saudi Pro League, while Al-Taawoun remained 17th.
