Tottenham are reportedly exploring a surprise late move for Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo as they prepare for the possibility of Kevin Danso leaving the club.
A deal would mark the first senior first-team transfer directly between Tottenham and Chelsea in 17 years. Carlo Cudicini was the last established first-team player to make the switch, moving from Chelsea to Spurs on a free transfer in January 2009.
Tosin, 28, has slipped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and could be allowed to depart after being left out of all three matchday squads this season by Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso.
Tottenham have turned their attention to finding another centre-back after Danso indicated that he wants to leave. The 27-year-old Austrian is reportedly concerned about his lack of playing time, having failed to start a match this season, and is looking for a club where he can secure regular first-team football.
Sunderland previously had a loan offer for Danso rejected but remain in discussions with Tottenham over a potential late-window move.
If Danso leaves, Roberto De Zerbi would face a defensive problem, with no clear natural replacement for Jan Paul van Hecke on the right side of the defence.
His departure would also have an impact on Spurs’ homegrown quota. Danso qualifies as homegrown after developing in England with Reading and MK Dons. Losing him would leave Tottenham with only seven homegrown players, one short of the required number.
However, signing Tosin could solve that issue, as the former Manchester City academy product would count as homegrown and take Spurs back to eight.
Tottenham could also increase their homegrown numbers further if they manage to complete an ambitious move for Iliman Ndiaye, who also qualifies under the homegrown rules.
