Liverpool suffer major transfer setback as Premier League rivals plot surprise move for star

Liverpool hit by major transfer setback as Premier League rival considers shock move for star midfielder

Liverpool could face another significant departure before the summer transfer window closes, with Manchester City reportedly showing interest in one of their key players.

The Reds have already been busy in the transfer market, recently confirming the arrival of Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan deal that includes an option to make the transfer permanent for €55 million (£47.14m).

Araujo became Liverpool’s second major signing of the summer following Victor Munoz’s £34.5m move from Osasuna.

With the new season approaching, Andoni Iraola is continuing to reshape his squad and remains keen to strengthen the wide attacking positions. Liverpool have been strongly linked with Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, although PSG’s reported £145m valuation has made a deal extremely difficult.

Liverpool are also expected to consider player departures as they look to generate additional funds. Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah have already left the club after their contracts expired in June.

Curtis Jones is another player whose future remains uncertain, with Inter Milan reportedly interested in the midfielder. The 25-year-old has only one year remaining on his current contract and was recently absent from Liverpool’s squad due to a minor hip problem.

Manchester City considering Alexis Mac Allister move

According to reports from talkSPORT, Manchester City have identified Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister as a possible target.

City are reportedly considering the Argentina international as an alternative option should they complete their pursuit of Barcelona-bound Rodri replacement, with Mac Allister viewed as a more affordable option than Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Mac Allister has returned to Liverpool training after helping Argentina reach the World Cup final and will now be hoping to impress Iraola ahead of the new campaign.

The 27-year-old endured a difficult season last term, with his performances dropping after playing a major role in Liverpool’s Premier League title success in 2025.

However, a departure does not currently appear likely. The Athletic have indicated that Mac Allister is expected to remain at Anfield and could become an important part of Iraola’s plans.

Liverpool would therefore be reluctant to sanction his departure unless they can secure a suitable replacement first.

For now, Mac Allister remains focused on preparing for the new season. Liverpool will face Como in their final pre-season friendly on August 16 before travelling to Newcastle United for their opening Premier League fixture a week later.

After his impressive World Cup campaign, Mac Allister will be hoping to carry that form into the new season and re-establish himself as one of Liverpool’s most influential midfielders.
