Liverpool set £70m asking price for Cody Gakpo amid Tottenham interest
Liverpool reportedly have no intention of selling Cody Gakpo this summer, but a huge offer from Tottenham could force the club to reconsider their position.
Spurs have been linked with the Dutch forward throughout the transfer window, but reports suggest Liverpool currently view the 27-year-old as an important part of Andoni Iraola’s plans.
Transfer insider Pete O’Rourke claims two factors could potentially change Liverpool’s stance: the Reds signing additional attacking players and Tottenham submitting an offer of at least £70 million for Gakpo.
Speaking on the Football Insider Transfer Insider podcast, O’Rourke explained that Liverpool are reluctant to weaken their squad while they remain short of options in attack.
He suggested that the arrival of players such as Bradley Barcola, Ibrahim Mbaye or another forward could eventually make Gakpo’s departure possible. However, Spurs would still need to make a substantial financial offer to convince Liverpool to sell.
Liverpool signed Gakpo from PSV for around £44m in January 2023. A £70m sale would therefore represent a significant profit for the Reds, potentially making the proposal difficult for the club’s hierarchy to ignore if their attacking options are strengthened.
Gakpo has scored 50 goals in 180 appearances for Liverpool, although his 2025/26 campaign was underwhelming by his standards, with the forward managing just nine goals.
Despite his inconsistent season, Gakpo has previously demonstrated his ability to be a reliable source of goals when playing at his best.
For now, Liverpool are expected to keep hold of the Netherlands international. However, should the Reds add further attacking reinforcements and Tottenham return with a bid of £70m or more, the situation could change dramatically.
A major offer from Spurs could leave Liverpool with a difficult decision over whether to retain Gakpo or cash in on the forward for a substantial fee.
