Former Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to make a bold move for a £90m-rated midfielder who is believed to solve one of their biggest problem areas in midfield.
Former Spurs defender Kyle Walker has encouraged his old club to pursue Sandro Tonali, suggesting the Newcastle star could be a transformative signing. The Italian midfielder, who joined Newcastle United from AC Milan in 2023, has become a key figure in Eddie Howe’s midfield but is now facing growing speculation over his future.
Tottenham boss Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly keen on a reunion with Tonali in North London, as Spurs continue exploring options to strengthen their squad. The midfielder has also been loosely linked with interest from Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United, although a return to AC Milan is still considered his preferred move should he leave Newcastle.
Walker believes Tonali would give Tottenham much-needed control and stability in midfield, describing him as the type of high-level signing capable of elevating the team’s performance.
Despite strong support from Newcastle fans, uncertainty is growing around the Italian after earlier transfer links, including reported contact through his agent during the January window. He has made over 100 appearances for the Magpies, contributing goals and assists from midfield.
Reports suggest Newcastle would demand around £90 million to sell him, a figure that would significantly surpass Tottenham’s current transfer record.
Meanwhile, Spurs are already active in the market, having added Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke, Liverpool FC left-back Andy Robertson, and AFC Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi.
Walker also praised Tottenham’s overall squad depth, noting that the issue last season was more about consistency than talent. He highlighted players like James Maddison and Xavi Simons in attack, while stressing the importance of a fully fit Dominic Solanke. He added that defensive depth remains a key factor, particularly with uncertainty surrounding Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven heading into the new season.
