Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has offered a cautiously positive update on Florian Wirtz after the midfielder was forced off with an ankle problem during Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Brighton.
Wirtz will undergo further assessment by Liverpool’s medical team, but Iraola believes the early signs are encouraging, suggesting the injury may not be too serious.
“Unfortunately, he had to leave the pitch after a slight twist to his ankle. It doesn’t appear to be a major problem, but with games coming every three days, we need to assess his condition,” Iraola explained.
The victory marked Liverpool’s fourth consecutive win, leaving Iraola delighted with his team’s performance and, particularly, their impressive start to the match.
The Liverpool boss acknowledged Brighton’s technical quality, comparing them to Villarreal, who also caused his side problems recently. However, he felt the key difference was Liverpool’s more aggressive approach from the opening minutes.
Iraola stressed that his players needed to press harder, win their individual battles, recover possession quickly and take advantage of opportunities on the counterattack.
He was pleased that Liverpool executed the plan, explaining that their stronger start helped them avoid the familiar situation of conceding first and having to fight their way back into the game.
Meanwhile, Iraola also backed Alexander Isak to keep finding the net, provided Liverpool continue creating the right opportunities for their striker.
According to the manager, Isak is capable of delivering goals when supplied with quality crosses and placed in dangerous positions.
He also highlighted Bradley Barcola’s ability to beat opponents in one-on-one situations, explaining how the winger’s pace and ability to win duels can help Liverpool create better scoring chances.
