Luka Vuskovic has finally spoken about Tottenham’s decision to let him go and explained why Brighton was the right destination for his career.
The Croatian centre-back has made an impressive start to life in the Premier League, strengthening his reputation as one of football’s most promising young defenders. His performances have attracted attention after previously impressing during loan spells in Germany, Belgium and Poland, particularly during his breakthrough season at Hamburg.
Tottenham have faced criticism for allowing Vuskovic to leave while bringing in Jan Paul van Hecke, with several observers believing Brighton secured the better deal. His excellent start has also reportedly attracted interest from European giants Bayern Munich and Chelsea.
Speaking to The Argus, Vuskovic admitted he still does not fully understand why Tottenham decided against keeping him. However, he revealed that Brighton had monitored him for years and were determined to bring him to the club.
When asked whether he wanted to prove Tottenham wrong, the defender dismissed the suggestion. He expressed gratitude to Spurs for the support they gave him as a teenager, including arranging loan moves to help his development.
Vuskovic also made it clear that he is happy at Brighton, praising the club for believing in him and providing an environment filled with young, talented players.
Despite the criticism, Tottenham had reasons for accepting the deal. After consecutive 17th-place finishes, the club needed to strengthen its squad, and guaranteeing regular first-team football to a young defender would have been difficult. Manager Roberto De Zerbi has also made it clear that no player is assured a starting position.
From a financial perspective, Tottenham still secured a significant profit on a player who never made a competitive senior appearance for their first team. The agreement also reportedly includes a 20 per cent sell-on clause, potentially providing further income if Brighton sell him in the future.
Nevertheless, many Tottenham supporters remain unhappy with the decision. A SpursWeb poll involving more than 3,500 fans in September found that approximately 66 per cent believed selling Vuskovic and signing Van Hecke was a mistake.
His impressive performances at Brighton have only intensified the debate, although it remains too early to determine which club ultimately benefited most from the transfer.
For now, Vuskovic is enjoying regular football and continuing his development, while Tottenham have collected a substantial transfer fee. The real verdict will depend on how both defenders perform over the coming seasons.
