Andoni Iraola Delivers Worrying Injury Update as Liverpool Suffer Double Blow at Brentford

Liverpool have been dealt a major injury setback, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong both facing spells on the sidelines following their injuries in the Reds’ 2-1 victory over Brentford.
Szoboszlai had already missed Liverpool’s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester City because of a hamstring problem. He was also unavailable for their midweek Champions League encounter against LASK, which ended in a thrilling 6-3 victory. Despite those absences, the Hungarian midfielder returned to the starting lineup against Brentford on Saturday.
However, his comeback was cut short before half-time when he went down off the ball, apparently suffering another problem with his hamstring. The midfielder looked visibly frustrated as he headed straight down the tunnel at the Gtech Community Stadium, raising further concerns about his fitness.
Liverpool were awarded a penalty shortly afterwards, but the decision was overturned following a VAR review, with replays showing that Dango Ouattara had won the ball rather than fouled Alexis Mac Allister.
Brentford capitalised on the situation by taking the lead in the 44th minute. Keane Lewis-Potter rose to meet an excellent cross from Igor Thiago and headed the ball into the net.
The hosts’ situation worsened just before the interval when Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off for violent conduct after a headbutting incident involving Jeremy Jacquet. Referee John Brooks confirmed that the decision was made following a review of the incident.
With Liverpool enjoying a numerical advantage, manager Andoni Iraola introduced Jeremie Frimpong at the beginning of the second half, replacing Ronald Araujo in an attempt to give his side more attacking threat.
However, Frimpong’s involvement lasted just six minutes before he was forced off with an injury of his own, leaving Liverpool with another significant fitness concern. Rio Ngumoha came on to replace the Dutch defender.
Speaking after the game, Iraola explained that the two injuries were different. He revealed that Szoboszlai had experienced the same hamstring problem as before and suggested that the midfielder might have returned before he was fully recovered.
Frimpong, meanwhile, had suffered a new issue. Iraola also mentioned that the defender had experienced cramping in the previous match against LASK, explaining why he had initially been introduced against Brentford to provide additional attacking quality against ten men.
The Liverpool manager admitted that both players would be unavailable for a period of time, although he did not specify an exact return date.
Despite losing two important players to injury, Liverpool showed resilience and fought their way back into the contest. Victor Munoz brought the visitors level with a composed finish, scoring his second Premier League goal.
Alexander Isak then completed the turnaround in west London, firing a powerful effort into the bottom corner from inside the penalty area to put Liverpool ahead.
Brentford’s difficult afternoon continued in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card, reducing the hosts to nine men before the final whistle.
The victory ended Brentford’s unbeaten run in the league and allowed Liverpool to move above them into fifth place in the Premier League table.
However, the result came at a cost, with Szoboszlai and Frimpong’s injuries leaving Liverpool facing fresh concerns as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.
